With Google Home Hub’s home screen, you can turn off the lights, lock the doors, monitor CCTV cameras, and control the TVs around your home. It provides you with the ultimate control over your surroundings and safety. It is compatible with over 5,000 smart home devices across popular brands including Lenovo, Philips, Schlage, Kwikset, and more. In addition to its looks, the Home Hub will feel very familiar to those who already use other Google Home products. All of the usual key functionality remains in place, like setting alarms and reminders, asking about the weather and news, and streaming music from your favorite service.
It’s more critical than ever before to ensure you wash your hands properly, especially with the pandemic continuing to spread. The Nest Mini offers a brand new feature to help out kids. You simply say, “Hey Google, help me wash my hands,” and from there, it’ll play a tune for 20 seconds to encourage adequate time for washing hands. If you have a Nest camera connected to the device, you can view footage from it on the Google Nest Hub. We have two Nest cams in our test house and found viewing footage from them was a seamless process. Once you get it set up and configured, ask it to do just about anything—and remember to watch the display for prompts and more information.

Its latest device, Home Hub, marries a small voice-activated speaker with a 7-inch display that you can tap and swipe. Like the Google’s three previous Home speakers , it also houses Google Assistant. But it’s not full Android, so you can’t play Fortnite on the thing, alas. You're now walked through each of the features you selected and prompted to configure various options and link various accounts. If you've previously linked any streaming music or video services in the Home app, they should automatically appear here. View and control compatible lights, cameras, TVs, and other devices from a single dashboard.
It’s the central system that operates the whole system in the Google Home Hub. It also links to other connected smart home products around your home. With this, you have all the convenience of having comprehensive information on Google in an instant.

Youtube and casting feel redundant in a living room with a TV and Chromecast. The Hub still fits in as a digital photo frame, but that’s wasting a lot of its potential. In the bedroom, the screen is too small to make a useful TV alternative and it’s just not a room I’m in enough to make use of its best features. We consciously decided to not include a camera on Google Home Hub, so you feel comfortable placing it in the private spaces of your home, like the bedroom. On the top of the device you’ll find the Ambient EQ light sensor.
However, the Nest Hub works as a digital photo frame. If you use Google Photos you can connect your albums to the device during set up and have photos of your choice rotating throughout the day. We loved this feature and found some long-lost gems in our collection. The only buttons on the outside of the Hub are volume up/down and mic on/off.
Set a Timer
You can choose to display curated artistic images, or photos from your Google Photos library. Shared photo albums work, which I imagine is a bonus for families with faraway relatives who also use Google Photos. There’s some machine intelligence at work here as well.
By default, the Nest Hub sounds a pleasant tone with the alarm rings. If you'd rather wake to music, say "Hey Google, set a music alarm at ." The Nest Hub will play your chosen song or artist when the alarm is ready. It's easy to use Google Nest Hub as an alarm clock. To set an alarm, say "Hey Google, set an alarm for ." If you keep your appointments in a Google Calendar, you can view your scheduled events on your Nest Hub.
The Google Home Hub's killer feature is "ambient mode," particularly when paired with Google Photos. In crowded and busier places, it’s a likely occurrence that the Google Home Hub can be initiated accidentally. If you want to configure the sensitivity whenever the “Hey, Google” wake-up phrase is spoken, you can adjust it through the Google Home app. Show photos of my trip to Italy”, or “Find my photos of cats”. You can set these restrictions on all devices, or single out particular ones. Use your voice to show any picture you’ve ever taken in Google Photos.
You're now prompted to use the Voice Match feature. Voice Match learns to recognize your voice and the voices of five other users, so the Hub can display personalized calendars, reminders, and the like. You can choose to use this or not, it doesn't affect your setup—and you can activate this at a later time, if you choose. Google Photos is also an integral part of the Google Home Hub, as it’s the only way to use the photo frame feature.
Aside from that, the Google Home Hub delivers added convenience to simplify the tasks of your daily routine. In the days I’ve spent talking to Google’s little speaker-slash-display, I can’t say it has provided much utility that my Android phone didn’t already furnish. The future may indeed be voice-controlled, but even then, it’ll probably still be easier for me to ask the phone a question or command it to turn on a light. The screen brightens and dims to match the light in the room.
